Mistaken Love Story
(2014, One year alone)

1. Mistaken Love:
I made excuses
For his ambivalence,
Believing my own lies

2. Truth:
California warmth
New York cool, still married to
His blood-cold divorce

3. Momentum:
Sometimes you have to
Rock back and forth a little
Before you can leave

4. Strength:
You deserve deep love
Muster fierce, lonely courage,
Leave by the front door

5. Remorse:
Half-hearted or not,
He did love me in his way
My bones ache for him

6. Pain:
An email: He found
My replacement. I wonder
Does she have red hair?

7. Disillusionment:
Surgically removed,
Reconsider love with clean
Hands and well-scrubbed mind

8. Alone:
You’re fine. No one else
Shoulders your life. You alone
Begin and end here

9. Faith:
Wake up, then get dressed.
It's still dark outside, but new
Light filters through you

10. Protection:
Don't look. A handsome man
Follows, smiles, as you browse
New book stacks. You leave

11. Hope:
Joy awaits; perhaps
Today you'll tiptoe into
The world, open-armed

12. Love:
Caged, snarling, prying
Apart your heart's iron bars
You WILL love again
