CUE THE BEATLE'S SONG...

I'm about to turn 64 next Tuesday, June 21st. Will anyone need or feed me when I'm 64? Yes, most definitely. And who knows, maybe someone will love me, too. In the meantime, I'm eating well, taking good care of myself, having fun, and loving each day. Okay, loving most days. There are a few days I'd never want to do over, but even those have taught me lessons for which I am profoundly grateful. Each humbling was the spark that instigated my deepest growth.

Today, work is the focus. Recently, my role at work has changed. For 13 years I've been a Literacy Specialist, K - 2. Starting this September, I'll be the Kindergarten Literacy Coach. We're bringing literacy to a strictly play-based, developmental kindergarten. In a way, I'm the enemy of the three kindergarten teachers' educational philosophy. Luckily, we've worked together for 13 years and we like each other. My dedication to early literacy support - phonemic awareness and alphabetical principle - need not take away from the rich, playful, experiential learning these three wonderful, caring teachers have brought to our youngest students. My introduction of the wonders of words and the delights of reading will only add to their world. For me, reading is the path, the key, the door, and the introduction to the universe. Welcome home, little ones. You are about to become you.

And me? At 64, I'm about to become a little more of myself, too. I'm pleased to have lived my childhood in the baby-doting 1950s, come of age in the free-spirited 1960's, gained my independence in the selfish 1970s, and had my babies in the Aprica stroller 1980s. Well, the kids have moved out, and I'm coming of age once again, reliving the '60s in my '60s. The idealism, fresh outlook, and renewed interest in personal growth, have brought me back to myself. It feels good to come home. Yeah, that's me sitting up there with the roses in my lap - 1969 Homecoming.
